About Mosque:
A mosque from Arabic: مَسْجِد, romanized: masjid, literally "place of ritual prostration"), also called a masjid, is a place of worship for Muslims. It can be said that any act of worship that follows the Islamic rules of prayer creates a mosque, whether or not it takes place in a special building. Informal and outdoor places of worship are called musalla, while mosques used for community prayer on Fridays are called jumaʿ. Mosque buildings usually contain an ornamental niche (mihrab) placed in the wall which indicates the direction of Mecca (qiblah), ablution facilities and minarets from which calls to prayer are issued. The pulpit (minbar), from which the Friday sermon (jumu'ah) (khutba) is delivered, was once characteristic of the city's central mosque, but has since become common in most small mosques. Mosques generally have separate spaces for men and women. This basic organizational model took different forms depending on the region, period and denomination.
Mosques typically serve as places for prayer, Ramadan vigils, funeral services, Sufi ceremonies, marriage and business arrangements, alms collection and distribution, as well as homeless shelters. Historically, mosques were also important centers of elementary education and advanced training in religious sciences. In modern times, they have retained their role as places of religious education and debate, but higher education now generally takes place in specialized institutions. Particular importance is given to the Great Mosque of Mecca (center of the hajj), the Prophet's Mosque in Medina (Muhammad's burial place) and the Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem (considered the site of Muhammad's ascension to heaven).
With the spread of Islam, mosques have mushroomed across the Islamic world. Sometimes churches and temples were converted into mosques, which influenced Islamic architectural styles. The growing government regulation of large mosques has been countered by an increase in privately funded mosques of various affiliations and ideologies, many of which serve as the basis for different streams of Islamic revival and social activism. Mosque attendance rates vary considerably by region.
